Chapter 1

Feb 4, 2022

So inisip niyang dahil magkasundo sila, pakakasalan siya nito. Magkasundo sila sa lahat ng bagay! They were so good together that it almost seemed impossible that he was saying this!

“So? Wala akong pakialam kahit maraming magiging kapatid ang anak natin.”

“That would make them all illegitimate.”

“That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!” singhal ni Conchita.

“It’s the principle of it. I love my children equally.”

“Bullshit!”

“Please, try to understand.”

“Get out.” He said he loved her. But how could he love her when he wouldn’t even marry her?

“If I marry you, our child would be the only legitimate one.”

“And you prefer to have everyone illegitimate,” maaskad niyang sabi. Maybe everything he ever told her was a lie. A lie to make her sleep with him.

“Our child—”

“My child. He or she will never be yours.”

“Please, Conchita—”

Why was she so hard to love?

The child in her womb would always feel loved by her. She new exactly how to be a good mother—and that’s by not following the steps of her own mother and grandmother.

Conchita guessed she could always go back to the farm and help her grandmother manage it. She barely spoke a word and whenever she did, it did not show warmth or love or caring at all.

Her grandmother never remarried and was always spending time with her friends.

The man was old and dying. He died after five months, leaving her mother a few million dollars.

The next time she saw her mother was when she was thirteen.

Her mother married the man and divorced him as well after five years. After a year, her mother got married again. He was a middle-class man who had one child.

Conchita’s mother never asked her to live abroad with her. Time went by and she never fully learned to accept that her own mother did not want to spend time with her. All her grandmother said was that her father was a good man, a loyal soldier who died in battle.

It was a few months ago when she met Dante Cardinal, a man so much older than her. He showered her with love and made her think that she had value as a human being. Na hindi siya isang obligasyong pinagpapasahan lang…

Until today.

The woman was a parent to her, for God’s sake, and a parent had responsibilities more than sending its child money or signed greeting cards without any personal message at all.

“Hello?” sagot nito.

“Mama, si Con ito.”

“Nagpadala na ako ng pera kanina. It will reach you in a day or two.”

“I need more than money from you.”

“What do you need then?”

“I need to go there. I need to work there. I’m pregnant.”

“What are you talking about?” I will not be responsible for the child!”

“He’s gone. I want a good future for my baby.”

“Hindi mo pa kayang bumuhay ng anak. Wala kang papasukang trabaho dito—”

“Then find me a husband, I don’t give a damn! I just need to get out of this hellhole you put me in because you refused to take responsibility.

“Why, you ungrateful brat!”

Matigas ang desisyon ni Conchita. “Are you gonna help me or not?”

Matagal bago nakapagsalita ang kanyang ina. “Wait for my call. I think I know what to do.”

There was just no way in hell she was going to allow that to happen. Over her dead body.

She told him, “I got rid of the baby.”

“How dare you! How dare you!” sigaw nito, biglang napaiyak.

“Just leave me alone,” sabi niya.

“You’re damn right, I will!”

She cried for herself, for the loss of a love, for the loss of the father of her child. But the sadness was fleeting for she was more determined than ever. She would raise her child alone, peacefully, her own way.

She headed to the United States, two months pregnant.

The man was looking for a spouse and couldn’t find any. He was a proud redneck. It took a while to understand him speak with his Cajun accent.

He started drinking and one time, he almost beat her up.

She cried at nights, asking why her life turned out to be so horrible. But she vowed she would get out of that marriage soon. For her child.
