Chapter 1

Jason's POV

"What have you done?" Nick, the King's gamma, shouted. Until now, my part in the attack had gone unknown.

All eyes turned to me as he stood over the lifeless body of the pack warrior whose life I had just ended. Feeling the heat of anger from his eyes as they burned into my own, I began to shift into my wolf, ready to fight. I needed a way out, and there was no chance they would allow me to leave. Not now.

As beta of the Royal Pack, I was stronger than Nick, but even with him out of the way, I'd still have to get past the pack warriors that were also present. Even if I did survive by the slimmest of chances, I'd still have to deal with the elite force.

I quickly brought my wolf Blake forward, knowing I needed him to escape my sealed fate. Once shifted, Blake took complete control as he lunged straight for Nick. Seeing what I was about to do, he rolled to the side, shifting into his wolf. My wolf has dark brown fur and is slightly bigger than Nicks sandy coloured wolf. Haze, however, held an advantage. Being smaller meant he was quicker and lighter on his feet than me. Loud snarls filled the room as our wolves circled each other waiting to see who would attack first.

'Join us, Nick, or fall with the rest.' I shouted through our mind link. A link that was only possible because we are from the same pack.

Haze barrelled into us without responding, sending Blake flying into the wall with a thud. I felt my wolf's anger burning wildly at our invitation being refused. Our rage was now bubbling just beneath the surface. Before I knew it, Blake was back on all fours pinning Haze to the floor. His sharp canines hover just above his neck. A warning that if he wanted to live, he should stay down and not get back up. Nick wasn't my target, but that didn't mean I wouldn't add him to the list should he continue to push me.

The sound of feral growls and the heavy thud of paws sounded like thunder on a stormy night as the elite force grew closer. I knew I was running out of time. Without wasting any more time, I bit into his shoulder. Blood from his torn flesh entered my mouth, but that didn't stop us. Dropping Haze, Blake lifted his back leg kicking Haze in the head, rendering him unconscious, before throwing himself out the window and sending shards of shattered glass everywhere.

The pink rose bushes beneath the window softened Blake's fall. Vanessa, the Luna Queen, had planted them just that spring with the help of her daughter, Princess Angel. The Princess had only recently turned two. She looked so much like her mother, and I could only wonder if she would be as beautiful when she was older.

'I guess we will never know. As for our plan to work, the royal bloodline must be eradicated.' Guilt flooded me as I mulled over his words while remembering the deal I had already made. One that was far too late to back out of.

'I know Blake, but I can't help but feel guilty at the thought of taking the life of an innocent child.' Taking the life of an adult was one thing, but it would never come easy when it came to children, especially when you had known her since the day she was born.

As I looked at where I stood, I knew Vanessa would be upset once she saw the flattened rose bushes. Though I knew nothing would anger her more than finding out that I had been the one to orchestrate the attack betraying her and my Alpha King.

See, I had been approached by a group of rogues roughly six months ago. They had asked for my help to become a part of the Royal Pack, just like so many had before them. I had gotten them an audience with William, yet they were refused a place in the pack. The Alpha King hadn't refused their wish because of their status, as he always believed everyone deserved a second chance, something he had always stuck by. No, William denied them because they wouldn't disclose what made them become rogues in the first place.

His duty as Alpha king meant he had to always act in the best interests of the pack. Especially when it came to their safety, the rogues not telling him what they had done meant they could be dangerous and untrustworthy. A risk William wasn't about to take.

As the meeting ended abruptly, I was asked to escort the rogues to the border of our territory, which was just one more thing to piss me off. Being a Beta, I felt this shouldn't have been my job but that of a pack warrior. Seeing through my façade, the rogues could tell I was nearing the last straw. They told me they would help me become the next Alpha King if I was to help them destroy the Royal family we had now, giving them superior roles within the pack. To say their offer wasn't tempting would be a lie.

At first, I refused and threatened to kill them if they even thought of trying anything, but after a few more weeks, I sought them out. Upon finding the rogue's camp, I wasted no time taking them up on their offer, forming our carefully calculated plan.

William's POV

It had been three months since I denied the rogue's sanctuary, and all had been quiet. Or at least until this afternoon. After getting a mind link from my guards at the western border, I immediately told my gamma Nick to get Vanessa and my daughter Angel to the safe room within the palace walls. Knowing they were safe would mean I wouldn't be distracted while we eliminated those that threatened my kingdom.

I sent a mind link out to the rest of the pack ordering them to get themselves and their families into the bunkers under their homes. With the pack under attack, I wanted to have only my warriors out, something that would result in far fewer casualties.

I made my way to the balcony on the edge of my palace; this faced the direction in which the enemy was coming from. It didn't take long before the putrid smell of rotten eggs hit my nose, symbolizing that the rogues were almost here.

Just as I was about to shift, my head warrior Owen mind linked me telling me that my gamma Nick had been found unconscious on the floor in one of the rooms on the palace's second floor. Once they had one, the south wing where he was found was reserved for the beta and his family.

To say I was confused was an understatement; how had a rogue gotten into the palace undetected? They weren't the strongest of wolves as they didn't tend to run in packs meaning they wouldn't have access to the strength that comes from being a part of one. Let alone having the ability to conceal their scent.

"Alpha, I have been informed that beta Jason is aiding the rogues." Owens alarmed voice rang out in my mind, my wolf growling at the prospect of our Beta betraying us.

"How did you find this out?" I needed to know exactly what was going on. This was a serious accusation against a ranked pack member and a man who had also been a lifelong friend.

"A warrior witnessed the beta attacking the gamma right before leaping from a window at the end of the corridor and running toward the rogues." Owen had never been one to lie, so this confirmation had my blood boiling. My grip tightened on the railing, my knuckles turning a ghostly white as I fought for control against my wolf that wanted out.

So many questions swamped my mind, the main of which was why Jason was helping the rogues. And what could they possibly have to gain from this? As I made my way down the stairs, I sent a mind link to all members of my pack, alerting them not to trust their Beta, instantly labelling him an enemy. If anyone saw him, they were to report it immediately. I wanted him captured, and when found, I would be interrogating him, and he knew better than anyone that I always got my answers.
