Jade

“I swear, if I don’t get caffeine soon, I’m going to lose my mind.”

I muttered to myself, my voice thick with exhaustion, as I gripped the steering wheel, maneuvering my car down the fog-saturated roads of this tiny, sleepy town. Everything here was so quiet, almost suffocating. The sound of my tires crunching over the gravel road was the loudest thing around. I hated it.

College was supposed to be an escape, right? A chance for me to start over after everything that happened with my mom. But here I was, stuck in the middle of nowhere, in a town that didn’t seem to know the meaning of “bright lights” or “people.” It was fog, trees, and silence. Not exactly the vibrant city life I was used to.

As I approached the gas station, I could already feel the headache starting. I was running on empty, both in terms of caffeine and energy, and I needed something to jolt me awake. I pulled into the station with a sigh, desperate for some kind of comfort.

I noticed the big bikes parked out front. I’ve always wanted to ride one, but I’ve always been too scared to try. The bell above the door jingled as I stepped inside, the smell of stale coffee and dust hanging in the air. The place was old, rundown, with fluorescent lights flickering overhead, and everything was covered in that grimy layer of age that made it look like it hadn’t been updated in decades.

I walked over to the counter, my eyes scanning the aisles for the coffee machine, when I felt it. The weight of someone watching me.

I turned slightly, and there he was. He was standing at the back of the store, tall and broad-shouldered, with messy black hair that seemed to fall perfectly, even though I could tell it was unstyled. His face was striking, sharp cheekbones, dark eyes that seemed to see straight through me, and lips that barely twitched into a smile. He had an edge to him, like he was someone who didn’t need to try hard to command attention. And yet, when I looked at him, I felt like I was the one on display.

My heart skipped a beat. I wasn’t sure if it was the weird town or the weird way he was looking at me, but something about him made my breath catch in my throat.

I quickly turned away, pretending to focus on the coffee machine in front of me. It wasn’t like I didn’t notice him, but I certainly didn’t want to make it obvious that my heart was racing. I fumbled with the lid of my coffee cup, trying to calm myself down.

But then I heard a voice.

“Alpha, stop scaring the poor girl with your eyes. We need to get going.”

I blinked and looked over my shoulder. A guy, equally as tall but with a carefree grin, was giving the first guy a playful shove.

Is his name Alpha? Such a weird name for a guy, I thought.

The man, Alpha, didn’t react to the teasing. He simply gave a curt nod, his dark eyes flicking back to me for one final moment. The kind of gaze that made me feel like he knew something I didn’t. Like he was trying to figure me out, even though we’d barely exchanged a glance.

Before I could make sense of any of it, the two of them turned and walked toward the door. Alpha never looked away from me. He just walked with that same casual confidence, and the other guy followed behind, still laughing as they left the store.

I stood frozen for a moment, unsure of what had just happened. The whole exchange had been bizarre, unnerving even.

Shaking my head, I grabbed my coffee and made my way to the counter, trying to push away the thoughts that lingered. But as I handed over my cash, I couldn’t help but glance back at the window. The motorcycle that had been parked outside earlier was gone. But that strange pull remained.

I left the gas station and stepped back into my car, my heart still beating a little too fast. I cranked the engine and started driving toward campus, trying to force myself to focus on the road. But no matter how hard I tried to ignore it, I kept thinking about him, the way he looked at me, the way his presence filled up the space, and how unnervingly powerful that one moment had felt. It didn’t make sense. I didn’t even know his name.

I focused on the road, but it was as if his eyes were still on me. The thought of him made my pulse race again. I forced myself to shake it off. Just a weird encounter, I told myself. Nothing more.

But when I pulled onto campus and parked, I noticed something that made my heart stumble.

There, standing near the entrance to the library, was him.

The same man from the gas station.

I froze, my hand still gripping the door handle. He hadn’t seen me yet, but when he did, his eyes locked onto mine with that same intensity I’d felt back at the gas station. It wasn’t just a look. It was like he had recognized me, like he knew I was there before I even stepped out of the car.

The tension rose in the air between us, and I found myself unable to look away. My heart pondered as I wondered…

What is he doing here?
