Chapter 1
Nov 19, 2025
A lonely car was driving through the enshrouded forest, the winding road felt like a ribbon tying up the perfect gift of the day - Claire’s eights birthday. Her father’s jokes, a seamless stream of whimsy, competed with her mother’s songs, her voice clear and melodious, harmonizing with the rustling leaves.
But as twilight deepened, a strange disquiet crept over Claire. The car's headlights carved out tunnels of light through the gathering dark, casting long shadows that flicked and twisted like specters fleeing the beams. A shrill, piercing sound, barely audible at first, began to weave its way through the melody of her mother's song.
Claire's laughter faltered. The sound grew, a high-pitched whine that felt as if it were trying to burrow into her brain. She clutched her ears, her face scrunching in discomfort, the joy of moments ago souring into confusion and fear.
"Mom?" her voice quivered, barely audible over the now-deafening whine.
Her mother turned, eyes wide with sudden panic, mouth moving in silent warning. Her father’s steady hands trembled on the steering wheel, his usual calm demeanor shattered by the same agonizing sound that tormented Claire.
Without warning, the car swerved violently. The night exploded into chaos, the screeching of metal and the shattering of glass orchestrating a symphony of terror. Claire's world spun, a dizzying, nauseating whirlpool, and then darkness took her, swallowing the remnants of her birthday joy.
She drifted in a void where memory and reality blurred. Whispering voices called to her, soft and distant, like an echo of an echo. Consciousness flickered, pain seeping through the fog of her mind.
“Claire, hold on, darling!” Her mother’s voice, tinged with desperation and something more terrifying—fear.
When her eyes fluttered open, confusion greeted her. Flames licked the carcass of the car, casting eerie shadows that danced on the trees. Her parents were nowhere within sight. Panic clawed at her throat.
“Mom? Dad?” Her voice broke, tears streaming down her dirt-streaked face.
A small hand grabbed hers, startling her. A boy, slightly older, with eyes too knowing for his age, appeared beside her. His grip was firm and strangely reassuring. As the car gave a final, mournful creak and erupted into a violent inferno, the boy pulled her away, deeper into the woods.
“I’m sorry, Claire. I’ll protect you, no matter what,” he whispered against the roar of the fire.
Claire broke free and ran back towards the car, she thought she saw postures, bodies, there were some people, but when she came closer there was nothing but fire. She turned her back to see if the boy was still there in the woods, but he disappeared as well. The darkness ate them all.
Claire screamed without sound, the dream folding in on itself, reality twisting into nightmare. And then—awakening. Panting in the still, oppressive darkness of her room, she felt the lingering touch of the boy’s hand, the fierce heat of the fire. Her heart raced, the dream's echo fading as she wrestled her fear, forcing calm into her clenched muscles. She lay there, breathing in the silence of her dark room, willing the remnants of the dream to fade with the rising sun.
But some shadows lingered longer, clawing their way into the waking world. And as Paris stirred outside her window, Claire knew this day held more than just shadows. She could feel it—an edge, sharp and waiting. Today, something was coming. Something that whispered of the past, of secrets hidden deep in the ensnaring dark of the woods where her parents had vanished.
